Site Visit 1 - Portal Frame Example (week 1b)

This site is situated at St Josephs College in Geelong. It is to be the Science and Technology center within the school. As you can see only part of what I believe is to be a 3 storey structure has been erected. It may be difficult to tell, but the structure is being built almost right in the edge of what is almost literally a cliff, struggled to walk up it. There is very limited work space, so cranes have been accessing the site from the side entrances.

Fixed joints between columns and beams at the ceiling of the second storey.

Tempory bracing that uses clamps to hold onto the steel members. May also be being used as sort of safety fence for workers on the second storey.

Building Visit 1 (week 1a)

St Josphes' schools performing arts center/theater. Being a courtyard in a school the area beneath is handy for shelter from rain, wind, sun during lunchtimes. or a car park?

And here it is during construction, was completed mid 2005. Suppose its no fed. square but I though it was interesting how the rear end of the theater stuck out without any direct supports to the ground.

The rear faces consist of some type of weather resistant fibre-board, painted yellow and bolted on.
